Traders Point Creamery

Jesse and I enjoy our little day trips to different places in the state and I have wanted to check out this creamery that I have heard so many good things about. It is in Zionsville which is just north of Indianapolis. The drive out there was beautiful. All the leaves were in full bloom and the colors were so vivid. We weaved along a very narrow country road and pulled into the gravel lot of the creamery. The large open farmland, the barns and the little garden could all be seen from the parking lot. We went into the store in the bottom level of the barn and looked around while we waited for the other customers to finish up. The young girl behind the counter greeted us and we told her that it was our first visit and where should we start. She suggested getting a snack up in the restaurant since they were still serving lunch, then take the self-guided walking tour, come back for another snack and then go see them milk the cows. And we decided to do just that.

We climbed the wooden steps to the upstairs of this barn. The place was all wood and just awesome. The menu was interesting and they had a rather advanced charcuterie platter which Jesse just loves and could not pass up. It had summer sausage, chicken liver pâté and a very nice head cheese. Jesse thought it was delicious. We also had really good red wine and split a grilled cheese sandwich with sautéed asparagus and green beans.

After our lunch we headed back downstairs to get our pass to tour the grounds. It is about a 1.5 mile walk past the cow barns, through the cow fields, past the chickens and around the outside edge which takes you near Eagle Creek. We got some good pictures of the cows since they were up close. As we headed down the path I saw a fuzzy caterpillar. I love them, the black and brown ones. I see them everywhere and they remind me of my childhood. I had 4 at one time and I kept them all winter. They even pupated and turned into moths. I had my poor father stop the car in the middle of the road once because I saw a caterpillar crawling across the double yellow lines. I took him home and named him Phil after Philpots road where I found him. I was so excited I picked up two of them and would have collected them all but there were so many. Also Jesse said I was not allowed to take them home so to my disappointment I had to leave them in the grass.

When we walked near the chickens they all came up to the fence. We had to disappoint them since we didn’t have any food to feed them. The walk through the woods was wonderful. The trail was full of fall colored leaves and there was a thick layer of them under your feet as you walked along. We talked Game of Thrones and how we like the travel life so far. I always enjoy our strolls around in nature. Jess and I have such fun conversations and we come to many good decisions as we walk around outside.

We made our way back to the barn and headed up to the dairy bar since the restaurant was between lunch and dinner seatings. I had some very creamy caramel apple ice cream and Jesse had some more of that wine he really liked. We sat and warmed up while waiting for cow milking time.

The cows are milked twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. The gentleman that was doing the milking says they have about 54 cows and it takes around an hour to milk them all. The setup they have was pretty cool. They use automated milkers that they attach to the udders and there is this little rotating fence that keeps them in place and opens when they are done so the one cow can leave and the next can get in. It was quite the operation. He did say it takes some time to get them used to it all but it was a first for me to see so I thought it was pretty neat.

The store had so many different things that they make at creamery that you could buy an take home we had a hard time deciding what to get. We ended up buying some hard cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, pita chips, sausage and a little pie. That was going to be our dinner and dessert and it was all very good. It was worth every penny and it was a great day out with my hubby. I think we got some pretty great pictures too.
