When Jesse and I lived in Raleigh, NC we often went to the North Carolina Museum of Art. We loved it there. We only went in once or twice but we ran on the greenway that weaved through there quite often. They had outdoor art sculptures and little walking trails through the woods. One night we went to Art in the Evening. It was an event that they had every Friday night and various activities would rotate through there. One night we went they had a jazz band called Sidecar Culture Club and they were awesome. We had cheese and wine while we listened to the music. There was a restaurant there that we were able to sneak in and have a very interesting meal.
When we arrived here in Indy we saw that they also had an art museum and decided to take a day trip out to see it. This was not what we expected at all. It was three floors with more art than we could see in a week. There were famous artist’s paintings that I never thought I would see, Monet, Picasso and others. It was very impressive.
We explored the first floor and roamed through all of this art from all different time periods. It was arranged in halls that all connected together so you just kept walking further into the museum. We never made it to the other floors. We really wanted to see the art outside and explore the grounds. We saw the “bacon” art on the way in and we were curious what else was out there.
The museum had a little café so we decided to get some lunch. Bacon art makes you hungry. We also poked around the museum store. They had some nifty stuff in there.
The museum has a lot of art thanks to the Lilly family and they have a very big home on the grounds of the art museum. It was one of those old cottage homes that the very rich built way back when. It is along the lines of the Biltmore and other old big homes around the country. There was a large garden and greenhouse that I wish I had seen it in full bloom. It must have been amazing. The greenhouse is where I got all my terrarium supplies.
We toured the home which was all decorated in 1930’s furniture. The second floor was all about the history of the home and how the house was built and why. It was pretty cool to imagine how people lived back then and how this was a home away from home for the people who had lived there.
It was a great day at the museum and I hope we can find time to go back and see some more of the 150+ acres of land and some of the outside sculptures.
