So for those of you that do not know, I love plants. Plants of all varieties; flowering, fruiting, pretty, weird, carnivorous, colorful or just plain green. I had five spider plants and an aloe plant when we lived in our townhouse. I loved those plants. They did not survive the move and I was crushed. So I got another spider plant and an aloe plant to try to recreate the environment I had in our old home. Well between the cat and the dog they both were eaten. It is much harder to keep plants and pets separate when you live in a one bedroom apartment where you own none of the furniture.
Someday I will have a great garden or greenhouse where I will grow fruit and vegetables and live in a little cottage covered in solar panels and wind turbines. Jesse and I will live off the grid and off the land. I will learn about soil and plant nutrition instead of medical analyzers and other people’s health problems. It will be awesome.
So because my husband loves me and knows that plants make me happy he let me get supplies to make my own terrarium. Why I had not thought of this sooner I will never know. It is a great way to keep plants safe from the cat since they are enclosed in great glass globe.
We went to the Indiana Museum of Art and on their 150+ acre land they have a big beautiful home and the most amazing greenhouse I have ever seen. There were fruiting trees in there along with some beautiful orchids. It was just a dream come true. That is where I got the idea for the terrarium. They had a whole section of plants specifically for a terrarium. We told the wonderful ladies in there that we wanted to tour the house but we would be back so I can build a terrarium with their help. The one lady was wonderful and said she would be happy to enable me.
After our tour of the home Jesse let me loose in the greenhouse as he further explored the wonderful grounds this home was built on. I picked out 5 small plants. Three that looked like little trees, one that looked like ivy and one that had little purplish specks on its leaves. I also picked out my terrarium. It has a heavy base and an open lid that I have covered with mesh to keep Nick’s evil little teeth away from my plants.
I also lucked out because the wonderful woman helping me teaches classes on making your own terrarium and she sent me home with a step by step how to list. I went to a few stores to get some gravel and some charcoal for my drainage layer, some mesh to put the soil on and of course some extra soil as well as a spray bottle so I can carefully water them. I began the assembly process, making sure to be gentle when I pried the plants out of their little plastic pots and spread out the roots so that they will be able to stay stable while they grow.
Overall I am very happy with my little garden. Maybe if I am good at this I can get a bigger one and add some little gnomes and other fun decorations. For right now my goal is to nurture my little plants and keep them safe from the deadly jaws of the cat. So far so good.
