Gird Your Loins

Moving to Indiana provided Chrysa and I with a great opportunity to try the local delicacies.  I really wanted to try and find a local or regional dish that I could sink my teeth into. I firmly believe that all areas of the country have native cuisine that they can be proud of.  After all, my home town of Buffalo, NY, identifies itself with Chicken Wings and Beef on Weck (as well as the Buffalo Bills #InTerryWeTrust).

The only real way to learn what’s good is to talk to locals. I’ve asked pretty much everyone I’ve met to tell me what the locals eat. After asking the run club, my co-workers at the video store, and even the old dude sitting next to me at Peoples Brewery, we have a consensus…Pork Tenderloin!

A Pork Tenderloin sandwich is a pork tenderloin pounded out with a meat mallet, breaded, and deep fried. It’s then served on a hamburger bun with traditional burger toppings.

Here is one that I got started on.

From what I understand most restaurants in the Midwest have a version of this belly bomber on their menu. An Indiana joint called Nicks Kitchen gets credit for being the creator. However, both Indiana and Iowa vie for the title of best tenderloin.

So far I’ve sampled two of these gastronomic delights. The first one I had was a DT Kirby’s. DT Kirby’s is a true dive bar, and the sandwich reflected that. It was oversized and greasy. I decided to top it with only pickles and mustard to cut through some of the grease. If you are looking for a sandwich to match with beer, this one will not disappoint. This would be a great late night drunk meal.

The second sandwich I got was at Sgt. Preston’s. Preston’s version was a little more refined, but not by much. It was less greasy and crispier. I think they use a cracker breading to get the crunch. Although it was filling, I was still able complete a shift at the video store without any gastrointestinal distress.  It was really good and is my favorite so far.

After two good experiences I am on a quest to find the best. I’m taking suggestions of places to get this delectable monster. Please hit me with your suggestions by leaving a comment on the blog or by Tweeting @jessezachary #lovethetenderloin or commenting on Facebook. Have loin, will travel.

While doing some research on the tenderloin sandwich, I found that people have made a movie about their search. Check out the link if you’re interested in learning more.
