First Impressions

Chrysa and I have been in the City of the Hills for about a week and a half now. So far Chrysa has started work, we have settled into the house, and I have started looking for a job. When we moved to Indiana I was amazed by how easy it was to feel at home in a new location. Oneonta has proven to be no different. We arrived in town on Saturday, did a quick unpack, and immediately found a place to get a bite to eat. On that first night I believe we found, “our place.” We ended up at The Depot. This place has everything we love. It’s a converted train depot, and the décor is rustic and charming. The service is great and the food is spectacular. It’s places like this that make a new town feel like home.

For this assignment we have a 5 bedroom house. It’s really going to be nice to have more space this time around. In fact, we have our first visitors coming this weekend. Chrysa’s parents will be in town!

Oneonta is considerably smaller than Lafayette, but there is still plenty to see and explore. Chrysa and I really want to keep up with our fitness, so we have been running through town. We have found this to be a good way to recon the area. We get our daily run in, while making notes on what we want to investigate further. We already have a growing list of places we want to get food and drinks from. In fact we may have already found our Christmas date night restaurant.

We have also managed to stumble upon both colleges in Oneonta. While doing a run through town we ran up the Cherry Street hill. This street takes you to the base of Hartwick College. The views from Hartwick are stunning, you get a wonderful view of the valley, and the surrounding mountains. The other college is SUNY Oneonta. I’m not sure what main road you use to get to the campus. In my infinite wisdom I decided to run up Clinton Street (I think I had a stroke). Once I got to the top I did a short run through the campus. It is certainly beautiful. I can’t wait to explore it in more depth.

I’m sure we are going to end up somewhere we don’t like at some point. Thankfully it looks like Oneonta is not that place.

Cheers to that!
