Choose Your Hard

Have you ever heard the phrase “choose your hard”? I am sure I saw it on a fitness inspiration page on Instagram or something. I think about it from time to time. It is a very wise thing to say. Time passes no matter what and how you decide to spend it oftentimes depends on what “hard” you chose.

When we moved here to SLC it was because traveling was becoming hard for me. I was tired. It was tough going from assignment to assignment with little downtime in between. I was hoping living in one place would be a good way to make friends, find community, have a routine and a schedule I could plan around. But living in one place is hard too. It becomes a bit boring and you lose excitement about a place when you know it will be there and you will be there so you can always explore it later, or next week or next month.

We have been doing things, don’t get me wrong. We went to Snowbird for Oktoberfest on Sept 9th where it snowed 18 inches! We had an awesome time and really enjoyed ourselves. That is about all the winter that Jesse wants to have to deal with but we will see what kind of winter we have this year.

Museum visits are another way we fill our time when we are off together. This most recent exhibit was about all the nature around us, even here in the city. The local plants and animals were highlighted and it was a very nice exhibit.

We also wander up to Park City when we can, especially when the air is toxic down here in the Valley. Our favorite place to go is High West Distillery. I love their shishito pepper appetizer.

Hiking is also something we do often. Our most recent hike up Desolation Lake trail to the Salt Lake Overlook had us walking from summer to fall to winter all in one trek. It was quite the experience and we were not totally dressed appropriately. But now we know for next time!

As Jesse mentioned we also bought a big white Sprinter van. We are going to work on converting it into a camper. So far she has new tires and just recently went in for an oil change and some other repairs (it had a 70mph governor on it so that had to be changed!). It is a fun project for us this winter. We will have someone that is not us cut the holes in it for some fans and a window but we will do much of the other interior work. This will be awesome to take to our runs in CA and if we want to do a weekend camp out at one of the Big 5 parks nearby.

So it is not that we are not doing things to enjoy ourselves. We still go for hikes up in the canyons, we still go out to eat at fun places it is just that we find it hard to sit and blog about it. I am not sure why, it is fun stuff and we want to share it with everyone. But it has been hard lately. It is hard to keep up with the blog but it is also kinda hard to feel like we are missing out on recording some of the things we have been up to. I guess we just have to choose our hard.
